Pantomime (informally, panto) – not to be confused with the theatrical medium of mime – is a musical-comedy theatrical production traditionally performed in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, South Africa, India, Ireland, Gibraltar, and Malta, mostly during the Christmas and New Year season. The pantomime first arrived in England as entr'actes between opera pieces, eventually evolving into separate shows. Traditionally performed at Christmas, with family audiences, British pantomime is now a popular form of theatre, incorporating song, dance, buffoonery, slapstick, cross-dressing, in-jokes, topical references, audience participation, and mild sexual innuendo.
