An article appeared in the Panorama about Alan being in the army. The article stated: 19 year old Osmond is a fine soldier according to the cadre in Company A, 5th Battalion, 1st Brigade. On active duty from his National Guard unit, Private Osmond was nominated by the company for the America Spirit of Honor Medal, the highest award given a basic trainee. And, he was named the Outstanding Trainee.
He recorded the highest score for the company in basic rifle marksmanship, was among the top three on the final Physical Combat Proficiency Test, and had a near perfect score on the graded test.
Unlike many celebrities who have taken basic training with the 1st Brigade, Private Osmond came, “to work become the best soldier I possibly could. I didn’t want any special celebrity treatment”, he recalls. “I wanted to take everything like all the other guys and just be a typical trainee.”
Private Osmond attempted this by letting his celebrity status go unknown for his first two weeks in the Army. He may have had it remain so even longer had not a phone call to the post from his agent revealed his true identity. The call was a request that Osmond be granted an early Christmas leave so he might be able to tape the Andy Williams Christmas Special with is brothers, which aired on December 20. The request was granted.
The ensuing weeks saw him leading his company on the practice PT tests, become high firer on the rifle ranges with a 68 and display leadership qualities. During breaks in training, he would occasionally lead the group in song and he was often the center of attention. Perhaps one trainee summed it best by saying, “You never would have known he was a star, he’s just a real nice guy.”
Osmond says he enjoyed the rigors of basic training. “I really like almost everything we did. It was tough, but it’s an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything.” |
